Carol's Books and Other Resources
How is a book born? Well, I can't speak for all authors, but my first book, How To Get Your Child Off the Refrigerator and On To Learning was written purely in response to all the kind and encouraging comments that resulted from this webpage. I hate to admit this to you, but this was never a well-thought out plan. I simply turned to my husband one day and said, "I wish I had known then what I know now." And being the oh-so-techie guy that he is, he suggested this website. The reaction was instantaneous. From the many letters received from around the world (yes - U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, India and many others), I noticed similar questions arising. I knew that folks were hungering for some useful information and fresh perspective that just wasn't available in the current books addressing the needs of our terrific kids. So I took some time off of homeschooling (which delighted my children...until the make-up days arrived mid-summer) and put all my thoughts on paper. The final result, called "How To Get Your Child Off the Refrigerator and On To Learning", was published by Emerald Publishing in 2000. .
I began my speak activity the same year that the book was released and am now am privileged to speak all over the United States and Canada.
AND, I have two more books in the learning series. Here's the scoop.
Carol's latest book in her learning series is The Big WHAT NOW Book of Learning Styles. Most learning style books spend a huge amount of time coming up with a really neat system (requiring many long and arduous survey questions, the plotting of graphs and grave mental ponderings) to eventually achieve a really cool name for your child. "He's a left-brained socially conditional argyle wearing Platypus!" But so often, these same books don't put near the effort into telling you what you should do now. This book is exactly the opposite. Very little discussion goes into what we're going to call him. The overwhelming majority of this book is dedicated to what you'll do now, (Thus, the "What Now" in the title... :-) how you'll teach spelling in a way that works, ideas for teaching math that make concepts clear, activities that make history come alive. And this book is set up to be incredibly user friendly. It's broken up into academic subjects. So it sits on your desk almost like a cookbook. You'll pull it out and open to whatever strikes you today. "Hmmm....I think Timmy needs a new approach in writing. Let's check out some new recipes." You open it up to the section on writing and find a smorgasbord of suggestions.
Carol's first book -- (get ready for the long title version) How to Get your Child off the Refrigerator and on to Learning: Homeschooling Highly Distractible, ADHD, or Just Plain Fidgety Kids -- was created to provide practical tips on reaching and teaching highly distractible kids. The book has the perspective of a mom who understands the difficulties and pressures parents face (just like you), while stressing the positive side of high-energy kids. It is filled with ideas, games, and approaches a homeschooling mom (or dad) or classroom teacher can use right away to teach math, reading, or whatever to our precious children, who also happen to be highly distractible.
Carol's second book -- If I'm Diapering a Watermelon, Then Where'd I Leave the Baby: Help for the Highly Distractible Mom -- is again loaded with practical tips. This time, Carol turned her focus and her humor to the needs of moms who are themselves a tad distractible and yet are dealing with the pressures and stresses of everyday life (plus, for some, the added pressures of homeschooling). Carol came to a point where she realized she would never be a Martha Stewart. This book shares how she came to terms with this and "released her inner Lucy Ricardo." The change has been wonderful. And after having accepted how she is made, she found strategies that actually WORKED with a mind like hers. What hasn't changed is Carol's focus on seeing the gift you have been given, in this case, the gift in being Gloriously Unregimented.
