The Colony of Jamestown

In Sixteen O' Seven while seeking great loot,
The Colony Jamestown on swamps did take root.
A little time later, one-third still alive,
This all male group was the first to survive.

Carol's Commentary: The land the settlers chose was swampy and full of mosquitos.  Unlike the Pilgrims who wouldn't arrive for another 13 years, these folks were here as entrepreneurs. Their intention was to make a good living and discover resources. This initial group was full of wealthy folk who weren't accustomed to physical labor. Things didn't progress well until Captain John Smith made the pronouncement that if you don't work, you don't eat. Things improved dramatically after that. (I may try that in my own house.)

Some married women came with their husbands, but the group was largely male until 1619 (12 years into this venture) when single women began to arrive.  There were several attempts at settlements before this, but this Jamestown colony was the first one that stuck.
