A Pint's A Pound - Part One

A Pint’s a Pound the World Around
But what’s a pint? And what’s a pound?
Such crazy words can make you swoon.
So let us start with just a spoon.

A teaspoon’s used for stirring tea.
But fill it once, then twice, then three,
For three of these, you soon will find
A Tablespoon you have designed.

TWO tablespoons an ounce will make
Like in the medicines we take.
8 Ounces? Now you have a cup.
A drink this size might fill you up.

With two cups, what you have is prime.
A PINT! The start of our beautiful rhyme.
A pint’s a pound the world around.
Now you don’t need to write it down.

A pint, you know But what’s a pound.
It’s what makes every dieter frown.
A pound is weight, we gain or lose.
We gain too much...we sing the blues.
(Gain even more....can’t see our shoes!)

There’s 16 ounces in a pound.
And in a pint, the same is found.
‘Cause when pint is full of water
It weighs a pound...just like it ought’er.
(That rhyme’s quite bad...so says my daughter)

Carol's Comments: This ditty, repeated regularly, will cement useful measurements and their equivalents into your child's memory. You'll notice that the audio link stops 10 lines before the end. That's for 2 reasons. First, my audio recorder only permits a 60-second recording. Ugh. But also, the last 10 lines really become a stand-alone piece.  After your kids have  learned this piece fairly well, review it occasionally by just reciting the last ten lines. The audio link for this second section is found on the menu as "A Pint's A Pound: Part Two".
