Slaves preparing dried tobacco to be shipped to England from Jamestown

Slavery Comes to America

Just one year before the Pilgrims arrived
A small quiet evil that one day would thrive
Did land on our shores, known as free and as brave.
In Jamestown arrives this great nation's first slave.

Carol's Comments: The year for this one, 1619, requires that the student knows the year the Pilgrims arrived (1620). If your students have not learned that yet, have them start with the Pilgrims ditty. The reason I wrote it this way is that I wanted it to be clear that slavery was a part of our country from the very earliest days. Even before we had Pilgrims, we had slaves. I myself, had mistakenly believed for the longest time that slavery didn't emerge till many years later, perhaps hundreds. I was a bit surprised to learn this.
